County Recorder Network

Norfolk is very fortunate to have an energetic and expert community of voluntary recorders and specialists known as the County Recorder Network.  This network has knowledge of almost all plant and animal groups and is co-ordinated largely through the Norfolk and Norwich Naturalists’ Society (NNNS), which was founded in 1869.

The NNNS suggests a County Recorder should:

  • Carry out their own recording
  • Receive records from others
  • Store records for their ‘group’ on a database
  • Validate records (by following up anything clearly doubtful if possible)
  • Pass records on to NBIS and to appropriate national schemes and databases.

NBIS is very dependent on the efforts and expertise of the County Recorders and is seeking ways of supporting their work. A joint intiative of NBIS and NNNS is the development of the Norfolk Red Data Book on NNNS website. This will contain information on thousands of species of conservation concern in Norfolk.

COUNTY RECORDERS, IF THEY SO WISH, CAN SEND US THEIR RECORDS DIRECTLY BY USING OUR NBIS RECORDING SPREADSHEET OR NBIS SURVEY CARD and emailing to nbis@norfolk.gov.uk

For further information, please visit the NNNS website (above). For information on specific species groups, please see the list of County Recorders below:
